Sweet Maria's Coffee is owned by Thompson Owen and Maria Troy, who met while in a Masters program at the School of the Art Institute Chicago. Thompson, also known as Thom or Tom, is responsible for sourcing and evaluating green coffee for the company and traveling to origin countries. Maria manages the business operations and handles larger projects. The company was founded in 1997 in a basement in Columbus, Ohio, due to a lack of quality coffee options and Thompson's desire to roast his own coffee at home. However, it was difficult to find green coffee at that time, and Thompson was paying extra for the privilege of having someone else roast the coffee. He saw potential for improvement and decided to start his own company.
